The beautiful Alauša lake surrounded by legends is a true decoration of the Utena region and the tenth largest lake in the country (area 1071.8 ha). According to one legend, on the eastern shore of the lake, the castle of Duke Alauš stood on the hill of Maneičiai. It is said that the duke was very fond of a large clear lake, so when he died he asked for the ashes of his remains to be thrown into the waters of this lake. The people did so, and named the lake itself Alauš in honor of the duke.
On the long, narrow peninsula inserted into the lake from the western side, there are the buildings of the Bikuškis manor, commemorating the years of the rule of the Radvils and Oginskis.
