Utena Church of Divine Providence
In 2004, the cornerstone of the Utena Divine Providence Parish Church was consecrated, marking the beginning of its construction. The church, characterized by its red brick walls, pays homage to the old Church of the Ascension of Christ in Utena while embracing an unconventional modern architectural style. Architects Ričardas Krištapavičius and Mindaugas Jamantas incorporated the symbol of Divine Providence into the church's design, utilizing shapes such as the ellipse and triangular bell tower. The church's decoration is minimalist, featuring exposed red brick walls, metal structures, painted cast concrete columns, and wooden pulpits. The altar and pulpit that adorn the presbytery were crafted by sculptor Valentinas Šimonėlis using Lithuanian stone.
Adding to the solemnity of the sacred space are spatial stained-glass windows above the altar, depicting the symbol of Divine Providence and the figure of Christ. The presbytery windows are embellished with three-dimensional stained-glass depictions of angels, while the church windows are adorned by captivating stained-glass depictions of the Stations of the Cross. All stained-glass windows were created by Prof. Kazys Morkūnas (1925-2014). This artistic achievement is unparalleled in Lithuania, showcasing not only modernist-minimalist expression but also a unique solution in the form of "Stations of the Cross" depicted as stained-glass windows. The installation of the stained-glass windows took place between 2008 and 2011.
